Bennion delighted to join Lions’ pride
SWINTON have landed another coup as they put together a strong squad for the 2019 Betfred Championship season, bringing in Gavin Bennion on a one-year deal.
The 24-year-old forward left Salford Red Devils earlier this month after just one season in Super League, but enjoyed a hugely impressive 2017 campaign with Rochdale Hornets. Bennion has previous experience with the Lions, having appeared on dual registration from Warrington Wolves in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, before a loan spell earlier this year in which he made seven appearances for the club.
The move has been funded in part by Swinton’s Pride Builder fund, with the club fending off strong competition from both full and parttime clubs to secure the prop or second-rower’s signature. Said Bennio: “I’m really happy to be joining Swinton Lions and can’t wait for the season to start.
“I have some good mates that play at Swinton and also a few new lads who have signed I’m close with too, so it made my decision easy.
“Andy [Mazey, Lions chairman] and the club have been great to me over the years and especially last year when I was on loan from Salford.
“Stuart Littler is a great coach and is well respected in the game, so I think we’re going to have a good year.”
Littler, currently coaching the Ireland international side in the European Championships, added: “Last year while on loan with us, Gavin was our stand-out middle.
“He is a player with a great work ethos that will support the culture we are trying to build here at Swinton.”
