boy and girl die in car horrors
tributes after tragic crashes
AN eight-year-old girl who died after being hit by a car in Salford was ‘the kindest person we ever knew,’ her family have said.
Emily Connor was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services on Saturday morning.
Police were called to reports of a collision between a blue Vauxhall Corsa and a pedestrian on Monton Road in Monton at 10.40am.
A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remained in custody for questioning.
Paying tribute to her, Emily’s family, from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, said: “To our Emily, the kindest person we ever knew.
“You will always be in our thoughts.
“We will talk about you every day. Rest in peace beautiful girl.”
It is believed the horrific incident was witnessed by a number of people in the area at the time. A shrine of floral tributes has been left at the scene.
Emily was one of three people to die in a day of tragedy on the region’s roads.
Earlier on Saturday, talented boxer Trent Warburton, 17, also died while his 19-year-old cousin was seriously injured after their bike was hit by a grey Vauxhall Insignia on Oldham Road.
And on Friday night, a 21-yearold woman also died in Middleton after being hit by a black Peugeot 3008 on Rochdale Road.
A 48-year-old man suffered a broken wrist and bruising.
A 31-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and drinkdriving.
Two girls aged 11 and 12-yearsold were also left critically injured in separate collisions in Heywood. Police continue to investigate all five incidents and ask anyone with information to come forward. Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts also issued a message for both drivers and pedestrians to take road safety seriously. He said: “As people get into their cars this evening, I would ask you to please recognise the safety of yourself, other road users and pedestrians. “Simple things such as watching your speed, planning your journey so you don’t feel the need to rush, avoiding alcohol and not being distracted by your phone could ultimately save lives. The evenings are also getting darker earlier and winter weather can make conditions challenging. If you’re cycling you should wear high-visibility clothing and have appropriate lights. If you are walking, please consider also wearing high-vis clothing and carrying a torch.
“I would urge anyone with information about any of these collisions to please contact our Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 and help our officers understand exactly how they occurred.”
