Man, 75, dies in coach horror

APPEAL FOR WITNESSES TO CITY-CENTRE INCIDENT

AN elderly man died after he was struck by a coach in the city centre.

Emergency services were scrambled to Lever Street, near Piccadilly Gardens, following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and National Express coach at around 1.30pm.

A 75-year-old man was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital with a head injury. He later died in hospital.

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigat­ion and enquiries are ongoing.

The driver of the Caetano coach remained at the scene to speak to officers. No arrests were made.

A section of Oldham Street and Dale Street were shut for three hours while investigat­ion work took place.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with further informatio­n to come forward.

Pc Philip Shaw, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigat­ion Unit, said: “Tragically a man has lost his life after a collision in the city centre and we are doing all we can to piece together the circumstan­ces that led to the incident.

“It happened at a busy time of day with many other pedestrian­s and commuters in the surroundin­g area and would urge anyone who witnessed this collision to please get in touch as soon as possible.”
