Latics sign emergency goalkeeper to play for one week

- By BETH COLLINSON

OLDHAM Athletic have signed West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Alex Palmer on a seven-day emergency loan.

The 22-year-old arrives at the club for his short spell after first-choice keeper Daniel Iversen was called up to Denmark’s Under-21 squad for last night’s game against Spain and Tuesday’s clash with England.

The Latics are also without their second keeper Zues De La Paz, who is on the sidelines suffering from a hamstring injury.

Palmer is a regular starter in West Brom’s Under-23 side having made his way through the Baggies’ academy system.

The young goalkeeper had a previous loan spell with National League side Kidderminster Harriers in 2014, where he made 11 appearances.

He has been named on the bench for West Brom’s first team on various occasions, but is yet to make his senior debut for the club.

Palmer has represented England four times at under-16 level, with his last appearance coming against France in 2012.

Oldham play Cambridge United this weekend at Boundary Park in Sky Bet League Two, and the young shot stopper will be available to make his debut for the Latics.

The loan will end on Friday 22 November.

Palmer signed a new and improved contract with West Brom in 2016 which will keep him at the club until 2019.
