Jose didn’t give me a fair chance, says Januzaj

ADNAN Januzaj has said Jose Mourinho didn’t give him a fair crack of the whip after the Portuguese took charge of Manchester United in 2016.

The Belgian, 23, didn’t make a single competitive appearance under Mourinho. He spent the 16-17 season on loan at Sunderland before being sold to Real Sociedad in the summer of 2017.

Januzaj’s electric breakthrough at United in 2013 sparked hopes that he could go on to be a club great but he never truly fulfilled his potential during his time in Manchester.

However, he believes that is in part down to the lack of opportunities afforded to him.

“I didn’t really get a chance because at the time he [Mourinho] probably wanted more experienced players with names,” Januzaj told Sky Sports.

“For me it wasn’t a problem. I had to move on and now I am happy in Spain and making a difference. I always knew I had the quality to play for Manchester United. I know what I am capable of.

“They didn’t give me a chance but it’s not a problem. I am happy in Spain and enjoying my football.”

Januzaj has been keeping an eye on United at the start of the season and believes they will soon return to the top of the game despite their recent struggles.

“They are struggling, it is a great team and great fans but they are struggling at the moment,” Januzaj said.

“Obviously, they are going to get back on top. I think they need to make the right decisions to win games. There are many different reasons [why they are struggling] so they need to make right decisions.”
