Readers ensure sick kids enjoy festive fun

- By EMMA GILL

A CHILDREN’S ward has been swamped with offers of help to bring festive cheer to poorly kids.

The M.E.N. reported that staff at Royal Oldham Hospital were appealing for donations as there was no budget for treats or decorations.

Youngsters on the ward face a range of health problems, with some having end-of-life care, and staff wanted to decorate the ward with extra trees and decorations and buy the children presents.

Now Manchester has well and truly delivered – with offers of Christmas trees, decorations, gifts and more.

Kevin Davies, who runs the Little Billy and Co land train and inflatables, said: “I can take the kids who are well enough for a ride around the car park. It has access where required for a wheelchair at the back. I just know that children love little Billy the land train and it broke my heart reading the article, I think they would love it.”

Kevin’s was one of more than 100 offers of help from people willing to donate decorations, new toys, trees, selection boxes and more. A Justgiving page has also reached more than £2,000 to buy decorations and treats for the ward’s 35 kids. Healthcare assistant Amanda Roberts said: “This will certainly be a magical Christmas for everyone. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
