A HUGE fireworks display in Albert Square has been confirmed for New Year’s Eve.

The event will take place in the shadow of Manchester’s iconic town hall, bringing the festive season to an end.

Hosted by Hits Radio’s Wes Butters, thousands of people are expected to brave the cold to ring in the New Year.

A big screen will be in place at the square displaying a countdown to midnight.

Fireworks will be released from the roof of the town hall as the clock chimes on twelve.

The alcohol-free family-friendly event will start at 11pm on Monday, December 31.

Coun Pat Karney, the town hall’s city centre spokesman, said: “Our New Year’s Eve event is growing every year, so now you can join the global countdown with the likes of Sydney and New York right here in Manchester. “Expect a fireworks display that will welcome 2019 in style. “This is a family-friendly show, so get your relatives and friends together in Albert Square on New Year’s Eve for the best show in town.” There was a fireworks display at the site of the Christmas Markets back in early November as the city’s Christmas lights were switched on. Last year’s display was dedicated to the 22 people killed in the Manchester Arena bombing. It will be the last time for at least four years that large events will take place at Albert Square because of massive renovation work at the town hall. A new home is also being sought for Manchester’s Christmas Markets as the historic building gets a muchneeded makeover and repairs carried out throughout.

Expect a fireworks display that will welcome 2019 in style Coun Pat Karney
