Latics extend run in energetic effort

- By CONOR COCKCROFT

CREWE OLDHAM 0 2 OLDHAM Athletic extended their impressive unbeaten run to five in the league as they beat Crewe Alexandra 2-0 at a soggy Gresty Road.

Frankie Bunn spoke about the difficulty of the opposition before the game, however, the terrible conditions would prove to be the hardest thing to face on the day.

The torrential rain and drenched pitch made it difficult to play free flowing football, but when Oldham captain Peter Clarke strode forward in the 17th minute, he found enough space to fire a stunning effort across goal into the top corner from 25 yards.

Crewe struggled going forward, their best chance of the half falling to Shaun Miller five minutes later when he latched onto a through ball, but his effort from a tight angle was well saved by Daniel Iverson.

After 40 minutes, veteran Chris O’Grady turned and curled a low effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the area, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead going into half time. The second half chances dried up, unlike the weather, with opportunities few and far between.

Crewe Alex substitute Owen Dale had the best chance of the half, the ball deflecting into his path seconds after coming on, but Iverson was out quickly to save at the attacker’s feet. Speaking after the game, Frankie Bunn said: “I thought we were excellent, first half especially. We came out the blocks, we pressed high, we were energetic, we were full of running, we had quality and that was from the goalkeeper all the way through.”
