MAN FILMED ‘SMOKING DRUGS’ ON TRAM

SHOCKED COMMUTER MAKES VIDEO OF PASSENGER USING GLASS PIPE ON TRAM

- By TODD FITZGERALD and SAM YARWOOD

A MAN was filmed on a Manchester tram smoking what passengers believe was an illegal substance from a glass pipe at three in the afternoon.

One person said the smell from the smoke gave them a headache.

The man was caught on camera heating the charred pipe with a lighter and turning it under the flame before inhaling.

The person who filmed the man said he was already on the tram when they got on at Chorlton.

Witnesses said the man alighted at Old Trafford.

The person who sent the M.E.N. the footage, who asked not to be named, said it was shot at around 3pm last Tuesday (December 4).

“Nobody said anything to him,” they said.

“I think everyone was too scared. You don’t know how people will react.

“The smell from it gave me a headache. I can’t describe it, but it was awful.

“I don’t usually get the tram, but I had an important meeting in town and didn’t want to risk missing it if I got stuck in traffic. “It was the first time in a long time I’d used the tram and that’s what I saw. “It’s just not nice.” The incident was not initially reported to Greater Manchester Police or tram bosses. The M.E.N. sent KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) – which runs the tram network – the footage so it can investigate. Managing director Aline Frantzen said: “We know that anti-social behaviour worries our customers and makes their journeys unpleasant, which is why we’re doing more to tackle issues like this on the network. “Our staff are trained to deal with these types of antisocial behaviour and illegal activities. “Any such incident, if reported at the time, would be dealt with through the joint efforts of our frontline staff and Greater Manchester Police.

“If our customers do see issues like this, we’d urge them to report it via our call points or direct to GMP.”
