Street star to be killed off in factory roof drama

- KATIE FITZPATRICK WITH ALL THE INSIDE STORIES

APOPULAR Coronation Street character will die in the new year in heartbreaking scenes after the Underworld factory roof dramatically collapses. Weatherfield residents will be seen running for their lives in the gripping storyline which will lead to a new Corrie ‘super villain’ being unmasked as part of a major whodunnit plot.

Viewers will be left wondering who could be behind the bloodshed in scenes to be screened in March.

New producer Iain MacLeod says “there won’t be a dry eye in the house” as we say goodbye to one from the street in the carnage.

The horror collapse is set to have repercussions for months to come as the next soap baddie after serial killer Pat Phelan steps into the spotlight.

And Iain revealed at a press event that the person behind the collapse is ‘someone we already know.’

“At first it looks like an accident,” he explained. “But it’s essentially a whodunnit.

“The death scenes will be heartbreaking and it will be someone viewers care about.

“There won’t be a dry eye in the house.”

Iain, who has taken over from Kate Oates as Corrie boss, was previously story editor on the show and worked on the explosive tram crash scenes to mark Corrie’s 50th anniversary, which led to the deaths of regular characters Ashley Peacock and Molly Dobbs.

“The biggest challenge was to resist the urge to add to the body count,” he told us. There will be CGI elements and somebody may or may not be on the roof when it falls in.”

Iain says the incident will also have an impact on factory boss Carla Connor’s mental health.

Carla took over the running of the factory from her half-brother Aidan following his tragic death in May.

Before his death, Aidan had written up a will which left his shares of the factory to Alya Nazir, which led to a feud between the two women until Alya backed down and agreed to hand back Aidan’s original stake in the business.

Underworld is notorious for bad luck and death over its 20-year history, including the demise of founder Mike Baldwin who died after a battle with Alzheimer’s in the arms of rival Ken Barlow on the factory steps in 2006.

And, in 2010, it was destroyed in a fire started by Carla’s ex Tony but eventually re-opened.

Iain says the Weatherfield community, including those left out of work, will rally around to rebuild Underworld following this latest catastrophe.
