New Year party to go with a bang

THOUSANDS EXPECTED TO PACK INTO ALBERT SQUARE FOR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS

- By ALICE IRVING

THOUSANDS of revellers are expected to welcome in 2019 with a huge fireworks display in the city centre.

The countdown to the new year will start at 11pm on New Year’s Eve in Albert Square – and will be family-friendly and alcohol-free.

Every year, thousands of people brave the winter cold to bring in the new year in style, with 2018’s event led by Hits Radio, and hosted by DJ Wes Butters.

The event will be held in the shadow of Manchester town hall and a big screen will carry the allimportant countdown to midnight – with the fireworks released from the roof of the iconic building at midnight.

Coun Pat Karney, the council’s city centre spokesperson, said: “Our New Year’s Eve event is growing every year, so now you can join the global countdown with the likes of Sydney and New York right here in Manchester. Expect a fireworks display that will welcome 2019 in style.

“This is a family-friendly show, so get your relatives and friends together in Albert Square on New Year’s Eve for the best show in town.”

This weekend is the final weekend of the Manchester Christmas Markets, coming to an end on Saturday for all sites, except Albert Square which closes on Sunday.

The festivities will continue through to the New Year, however, as the Ice Village Manchester continues its inaugural run in the city until Saturday, January 5.

And for anyone who hasn’t yet had their turn on the ice, the rink next door is also still open. Tickets can be booked at: www.icevillage. co.uk.
