Lovren’s invincible claim is an incentive for Blues

-

IF teams needed any more of an incentive to beat Liverpool this season, then Dejan Lovren has just handed it to them.

Despite the Premier League season not even reaching the halfway stage yet, the Croatia defender has already proclaimed that Liverpool are aiming to go the whole season unbeaten.

You can’t imagine Jurgen Klopp will be thanking Lovren for such a grand statement, especially with Liverpool facing their toughest task of the season in less than a couple of weeks with a visit to title rivals City.

The Anfield side are a point clear of the Blues at the moment and to give them their credit they are still in with a chance of pulling off an invincible season, a feat that escaped City’s clutches with defeat at Chelsea earlier this month.

But even while they remained unbeaten - this season and last - Pep Guardiola was always determined to play down the possibility of remaining that way throughout a long season.

“Hopefully we can be unbeaten until the end of the season,” was Lovren’s assessment of the aims for the next 21 Premier League games. “That is why we came to Liverpool. Arsenal did it before so why not?”

True, Arsenal did do it before, and so did Preston, in 1888/89. That it’s only happened twice in English top flight history shows how difficult it is.

It’s not the type of target you set less than halfway through a season.
