King of the Jungle roars disapproval

- By JOE BRAY

OLE Gunnar Solskjaer is not someone who has the attributes to be manager of United according to former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp.

Solskjaer was appointed caretaker manager of United on Wednesday in a deal until the end of the season, when a permanent appointment will be made.

The Norwegian replaces Jose Mourinho, who leaves United in sixth place in the league, but Redknapp believes the club should have taken a different approach despite Solskjaer’s familiarity with the club.

And former Tottenham and Southampton manager Redknapp says the decision could cost United a European place at the end of the season.

He told talkSPORT: “I wouldn’t bet on them to be in the top six, to be honest with you. It was a big shock to me when his name got mentioned yesterday.”

Redknapp continued, and said United should have considered a temporary manager with more experience like former captain Steve Bruce.

“I thought a Steve Bruce or somebody,” he said. “If they’re looking for a short-term appointment until the end of the year.

“He knows the game, he knows the club – he captained the club. Someone like that I thought might go in and take it until the end of the season.

“Solskjaer didn’t strike me as being the person for the time. He looks a nice lad but he doesn’t strike me as being a manager of Man United.

“I think the Bruce’s of this world... I could see him being more of a leader and being someone to go in there and hit them.”
