Shakers aim to get back on promotion trail against Tranmere

- By DAVE CROWTHER-GREEN

BURY will look to return to winning ways and break into the Sky Bet League Two automatic promotion places when they face Tranmere Rovers at Gigg Lane.

The Shakers found themselves 3-0 down at half time when they faced rivals Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park last weekend, thanks to a brace from Chris O’Grady and a goal from on-loan forward Sam Surridge.

Caolan Lavery pulled two goals back for Ryan Lowe’s side just ten minutes after the restart, registering his first for the club, but O’Grady replied just after the hour mark to complete his hat-trick and a 4-2 victory for the Latics.

Their opponents this weekend sit just two points below Bury in 8th, returning to league football for the first time in three years this season after being promoted from the National League.

However despite their impressive current league position, Rovers have won just one of their last five in League Two, a narrow 1-0 home win against Cambridge United, thanks to a late second half strike from forward James Norwood.

Norwood has been a much needed talisman for Micky Mellon’s side so far this season scoring 15 goals from 21 league games, putting him top of the goalscoring charts and averaging a goal every 126 minutes.

“Micky [Mellon] has done a fantastic job at Tranmere, and they have some great players they’re a big club with a great fan base,” said Lowe.

Three points for Bury could see them up to third in League Two and move them into the automatic promotion places for the first time this season.
