‘Bigun’ fights off mugger armed with Rambo knife

-

PAUL ‘Bigun’ Ashbee has told how he fought off a mugger armed with a ‘Rambo’ knife on the way home from Christmas shopping.

The cult Manchester figure, known for his long-standing friendships with Liam Gallagher and City legend Georgi Kinkladze, has been left shaken by the shocking attack.

He told the M.E.N. how he was walking back from the city centre towards his daughter’s house at when he was approached on Chancellor Lane in Ardwick, near the railway arch.

“It was pretty scary to be honest,” he said.

“I stopped for a cigarette, I heard something and then I turned round and there was this big geezer with his hoodie up.

“He just said ‘give me your money’ - he had this knife, it was a ‘Rambo’ knife, like something out of a movie.

“He swung at me and I grabbed his hand. He’s hit me around the head and fell to the floor. We wrestled on the ground and then he’s jumped up and ran off. He was crazed - it was the noises he was making more than anything else.

“He was moaning and groaning - I could see he was on drugs.”

Police were called to the scene and Paul, 52, was taken to A&E for treatment for cuts and bruises. He said an officer told him there have been a number of muggings in the area recently.

Paul added: “It was the ideal place to get mugged really who’s going to walk round there? I thought I had upset an Oasis fan with my book! But people just need to be careful.”

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
