Exeter spoil party as Latics run ends

OLDHAM Athletic manager Frankie Bunn said his side would bounce back after a 3-2 defeat to Exeter City ended the Latics’ six-game unbeaten run in League Two.

Jayden Stockley scored a hat-trick as the visitors twice came from behind to record their first victory at Boundary Park since 1962.

Sam Surridge had given the Latics an early lead, heading home in the 12th minute.

After Stockley equalised, Callum Lang put the home side back in front just after the break.

But Stockley struck twice to give the Grecians all three points.

Bunn said he warned his side about Exeter’s star striker prior to the game.

“We knew he was the dangerman, his record suggests that. I would say he’s the best centre forward I’ve seen in all the games we’ve played at Boundary Park.

“We’ve worked on Stockley in the box and the positions he takes up so we could be aware, but unfortunately we weren’t.”

Bunn thought the Latics should have been awarded a late penalty for a foul on Jordan Lyden but promised an immediate response at Carlisle on Boxing Day.

“I thought it was a pen but he hasn’t given it. It’s a disappointing result, especially on the back of a terrific run.

“You score two goals and you expect to keep a lead.

“We’ll bounce back quickly. The turnaround to the next game is quick, so we’ll be on the front foot again.

“It doesn’t matter where we go, we’re always motivated to win games.”
