Constituents Care4Calais
THIS December, my office helped collect donations for the charity Care4Calais – we were astounded by the response that we received. We collected coats from across the north west for people who have been left destitute in France and in need of basic essentials. I was proud that people in my constituency were so ready to offer support to those in need in Europe.
Large donations were collected from Lancaster University, UCLan, as well as Labour party groups in Preston and Stockport. It showed to me how willing the people of the north west are to stand in solidarity with those who have nothing.
Care4Calais is an inspiring charity that does crucial work to support refugees and migrants, saving lives in the process. Set up in response to the large numbers of people living destitute as a result of fleeing conflict and unsustainable lives, Care4Calais volunteers work tirelessly to facilitate humanitarian support. They show care and compassion to those left stranded.
Having helped with the donations, I, along with members of my staff, travelled to Paris to see first-hand the situation that refugees and migrants have to deal with. We were all shocked to see so many people without proper winter clothes, exposed to rain, snow, frost, icy wind, and, sadly, abused by the authorities and passersby. Most upsetting was the fact that families with small children are left living outside. Charities help find placements for the children and families who are awaiting state help, but official support is not always guaranteed. The work of charities is crucial for those who find themselves stranded. I would like to encourage readers to contribute if they can to the work of Care4Calais. As an elected politician, I will always use my voice to highlight the humanitarian suffering that happens, often unheard, across Europe. From messages I receive regularly, I know that this is also a real concern of many constituents. I will encourage decision makers to take more responsibility and work to end the suffering experienced by so many who are forced to flee conflict and unsustainable lives.
