Ross and Curry sign extensions to stay at Sale

- RUGBY UNION By CHRIS OSTICK

CAPTAIN Jono Ross and flanker Ben Curry have signed contract extensions with Sale Sharks.

Ross joined the club from Stade Francais ahead of the 2017-18 season and was named captain at the start of the current campaign.

The 28-year-old flanker has now put pen to paper on a three-year deal, which will see him remain at the AJ Bell Stadium until at least the end of the 2021-22 Premiership campaign.

“I am honoured to re-sign with Sale for another three years,” he said.

“We have a fantastic group of boys at the club and we are building towards something special here in the north west.

“My wife and I have settled nicely in Manchester and I had no hesitation when Steve asked me to stay at the club.

“I am really excited to continue my journey here and believe that there are big things to come in the very near future.”

And Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond is delighted to secure the long-term service of one of his key players. He said: “Jono Ross is one of the most professional and dedicated players I have ever had the privilege to coach.

“His work rate and desire are on a different level and his leadership qualities are exceptional.

“He is the catalyst of all good things going on at the club, so we are delighted to keep hold of him.”

Curry’s new deal will take the 20-yearold to 2023.

“We have a great group of lads here, and there’s a very positive environment at the club,” said the open side flanker, who captained the England under-20 team in the Junior World Cup in France last summer.

“We’re making good signings, and I’m excited to be part of the future at Sale Sharks.” Curry was also a member of England’s touring party to Argentina in 2017 - and Diamond believes more international honours will follow.

“Ben is a fantastic player and I have no doubt he will continue to get even better and fulfil his ambition of becoming an England international,” he said. “He is a brilliant product of our Academy and at 20 years of age is member of our senior player group.”

Sale will look to build on their impressive win over Bristol when they visit Gloucester on Saturday before hosting defending champions Saracens at the AJ Bell on January 4. The weekend’s win saw Diamond’s men move to ninth in the table, just four points behind Wasps in fourth.
