NO GO FOR ANDER

- By DAN O’TOOLE

ANDER Herrera remains committed to prolonging his United career despite Athletic Bilbao’s interest in re-signing the midfielder, M.E.N. Sport understands.

The 29-year-old is free to negotiate with foreign clubs after entering the final six months of his contract at Old Trafford on January 1.

Athletic’s newly-appointed sporting director, Rafael Alkorta, has told Spanish radio the La Liga outfit were interested in taking Herrera back to San Mames, along with Tottenham’s Fernando Llorente, as the club look to bolster their chances of avoiding relegation from the Spanish top flight for the first time in their history.

United triggered the one-year option in Herrera’s contract last season, but he could leave the club for free at the end of the current campaign, along with Juan Mata and Ashley Young, unless a new deal is agreed.

But sources close to Herrera indicate that while he is humbled by Athletic’s interest, the twice-capped Spain international is intent on adding to the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup winner’s medals he has won during his fourand-a-half-year career at Old Trafford to date.

The midfielder has scored 19 goals in 177 appearances for the Reds and is one of several United players to have flourished under the guidance of caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
