A ROAD junction in Wythenshawe has topped a list of the most dangerous places for pedestrians in Greater Manchester.

Official police data shows there were six casualties where Hollyhedge Road meets Woodhouse Lane in 2017 – the latest year for which figures are available.

One of those people was killed, one seriously injured, and four slightly injured.

Four of the casualties occurred as a result of a single incident at 4.45pm on March 14 that year.

A man, a woman and two children aged nine and two were hit by a Kia Picanto. The man later died from his injuries.

Just six days earlier, in the same place, a man and woman who were crossing near the junction sustained slight injuries after being struck.

The total number of casualties at the junction - six - is more than anywhere else in Greater Manchester during the year, the analysis reveals.

The police data shows the exact location of every one of nearly 200,000 casualty-causing accidents in Britain in 2017. The new analysis filters out only those in which it was a pedestrian who was hurt or killed.

It looks at the number of accidents that took place within roughly 150 metres of each other, at or near road junctions across the country, to find the most dangerous places in terms of the total number of injuries and deaths.

There were 11 more accident hotspots for pedestrians in Greater Manchester where at least three people were hurt or killed during the year. They were: The junction of Deansgate and Quay Street in Manchester city centre, which saw five casualties in four separate incidents

The A62 near Spring Street in Oldham, which saw three casualties in two separate incidents

- The A62 near Ash Street in Failsworth, which saw three casualties in three separate incidents

The junction of Briscoe Lane and Halliday Road in Newton Health, which saw three casualties in a single incident

The junction of Cheetham Hill Road and Balmfield Street, which saw three casualties in two separate incidents

The Shudehill Interchange in Manchester city centre, which saw three casualties in three separate incidents

The junction of Bury New Road and Waterloo Road, which saw three casualties in three separate incidents

The roundabout in Salford where Cromwell Road meets Littleton Road, which saw three casualties in two separate incidents

The junction of Bury New Road and Clifton Road in Prestwich, which saw three casualties in three separate incidents

The junction of Liverpool Road and Milton Street in Salford, which saw three casualties in a single incident

The junction of High Street and Mytham Road in Bolton, which saw three casualties in two incidents.

Across Greater Manchester as a whole, 967 pedestrians were hurt or killed during the year, the data shows.

Some 707 of those were slightly hurt, 238 seriously hurt, and 22 were killed.

A total of 125 of the people hurt or killed were using a designated pedestrian crossing at the time.

The majority of the pedestrian casualties - 568 - were male, while 399 were female.

The average age of casualties was 32.2 for women and 31.3 for men.
