Shakers hoping to create some room at the top

- By DAVE CROWTHER-GREEN

BURY will aim to extend the gap between themselves and the play-off positions when they travel to face Morecambe at the Globe Arena today. Two draws in their past two league outings have seen the Shakers slip to third in League Two and are now just three points ahead of Forest Green and Carlisle, who each have a game in hand on Ryan Lowe’s side. However, these results have kept their unbeaten run in 2019 going, and should Lowe’s men avoid defeat today they will extend that run to 10 games in all competitions.

Their opponents this weekend sit 22nd in League Two, just two points ahead of the relegation zone, and have not won in their last seven games, most recently drawing 1-1 away at Northampton Town.

A brace from Dominic Telford helped Bury scrape past Jim Bentley’s side last time the two met, as the Shakers secured a 3-2 home win back in September.

“We’re expecting a tough game, as all of them are, but we’ll take nothing for granted and we look to and bounce back,” said Lowe. Elsewhere, Lowe and midfielder Jay O’Shea were awarded the Sky Bet League Two Manager and Player of the Month for the second time in just three months yesterday, something that no manager-player duo has managed for the past five seasons.

January saw four wins and a draw for the Shakers, with O’Shea grabbing five goals.

He said: “It’s brilliant, these awards are nice, but what we set out at the start of the season was to get promoted, so these will mean nothing if we don’t go up.”
