Manchester will ‘outdo London for jobs growth’ following Brexit

- By LUCY ROUE

MANCHESTER is set to outperform London in employment growth post-Brexit, a study has claimed.

The economic report by law firm Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economics and Business Research predicts what the impact of leaving the EU will be on the UK economy.

The research suggests that more people will be employed within Manchester in 2019 Q3 than they were in the same period last year.

Assuming that Prime Minister Theresa May gets her Withdrawal Agreement through Parliament, it says that Manchester’s year-onyear employment growth in that quarter will reach 1.5 per cent.

The UK Powerhouse study says that Manchester is the fastest growing Powerhouse city in the north west. Established companies such as AO.com and Boohoo. com contribute to the city’s success, while many new start-ups are also stimulating economic activity, with businesses showing strengths in software development, IoT (internet of things), data analytics and IT services. Roy Beckett, partner at Irwin Mitchell in Manchester, said: “The overall impacts of Brexit on the north west in the long-term prove difficult to predict and although the report says that the economy will grow more slowly following Brexit, there are some positive signs in relation to employment levels.”
