Angel had devil of a time at Reds

- By RICHARD FAY

ANGEL di Maria has explained why his spell at United did not go according to plan following his high-profile move from Real Madrid five years ago.

The Argentine international moved to United during Louis van Gaal’s spell in charge at Old Trafford for a then club record transfer fee of £60m.

However, the dynamic midfielder failed to live up to the heights which had just earned him Champions League success with the Spanish side, and eventually left the club after just one season at United.

Although PSG will be without a number of high-profile stars when they line up to face United on Tuesday night, Di Maria will be in contention to start the match and hoping to show supporters what they’re missing. He said: “I only stayed one year. “It wasn’t the best period of my career, or they didn’t let me have my best time there. There were problems with the coach at the time. But thanks to God, I was able to come to PSG and be myself again.”

When asked to preview the upcoming fixture last month, Di Maria also eased the pressure on his side insisting they had already exceeded expectations in the Champions League.

He added: “I think we started the year very well, not so well started in the Champions League but we put the situation right and we finished first of the group.”
