Advice for dog owners when walking

-

THE cause of Alabama Rot is unknown and there is also no cure for the disease.

Dog owners are advised to wash off woodland mud, check for lesions and if in doubt contact the vet.

David Walker, the UK’s leading expert on the condition and co-author of the research, from Anderson Moores said: “This research, which was funded by the New Forest Dog Owners Group and the charity Alabama Rot Research Fund, was designed to look for geographical patterns, as well as environmental and climatic risk factors.

“A distinct seasonal pattern is suggested, with the vast majority of cases occurring between November and March, and limited cases over the summer months – just 6.5 per cent of cases have been confirmed from June to October.

“Any concerned dog owners should visit www.vets4pets. com/stop-alabama-rot/ for advice and a map of confirmed cases.”

A Dogs Trust spokesman said: “We would recommend a few precautionary steps that dog walkers can take when walking: where possible stick to dry paths and keep your dog out of muddy or wet areas, wash off any mud after your walk so you can check for lesions, wounds or unexplained ulcers, especially on the lower legs and paws.

“If you spot any, go straight to your vet if you are concerned and especially if they are not healing. If your dog starts to become ill or suffers from lethargy or vomiting, immediately contact your vets for advice.”
