Boy, 10, ‘lost eye when glasses broke during football match’

-

THE Football Association in Manchester is investigating claims a 10-year-old boy lost an eye after his glasses broke when he was hit in the face with a ball during a junior match.

A post detailing the alleged incident is being shared by junior football clubs across Manchester and the north west on Facebook.

But despite the Facebook post citing the FA in Manchester as having issued guidance, the say they have not received any official report or confirmation.

Officials have been contacting junior leagues across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, as well as the football associations of neighbouring counties, in a bid to clarify the accuracy of the claims.

The youngster was said in the Facebook post to have been playing in north Manchester when his glasses broke up into his eye after he was hit in the face with the ball.

The post claimed subsequent operations to save his sight were unsuccessful.

In a statement, Manchester FA said: “Manchester FA have been made aware of a report of an incident where a child wearing glasses was injured on the field of play. These reports are currently being investigated.

“As of this moment, no change in the FA’s ruling on the use of eyewear on a football field has come into place. For clarity, it is at the discretion of the match day referee to determine if they are happy for the match to continue.

“Any potential changes will be communicated through official FA and Manchester FA channels.”
