Victories at Anfield still hold special memories for United boss

- By LIAM CORLESS

OLE Gunnar Solskjaer’s two favourite away moments during his career as a United player both came at Anfield.

The Norwegian welcomes Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to Old Trafford this weekend, aiming for a win that will both boost United’s top-four hopes and deal a blow to the Merseyside club’s title chances.

Solskjaer has presided over wins against Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea this year but victory over Liverpool on Sunday would perhaps be his biggest achievement since taking over as United’s interim manager.

In 11 appearances against Liverpool as a United player, Solskjaer scored three goals – all of which came at Old Trafford.

Despite having never himself scored at Anfield, he has fond memories of playing against Liverpool away.

In 2016, he tweeted: ‘Great memories. What’s your favourite away win moment? Pally two headed goals for me along with Diego’s two goals’.

Solskjaer was referring to United’s 3-1 win at Anfield in 1997, in which Gary Pallister scored twice, and the 2-1 win in 2002, when Diego Forlan netted twice.

United face Liverpool this weekend having not lost to them at home since March 2014.

The two teams have met five times at Old Trafford since Brendan Rodgers’ men ran out 3-0 winners five years ago, with United winning three of those matches and drawing the other two.

A victory for United on Sunday will keep them in the Premier League’s top four ahead of games against Crystal Palace and Southampton over the following week.

Liverpool are aiming to win their first top-division title since 1990.
