A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man was found stabbed in the stomach.

Police said the injured man – aged in his 30s – died at the scene on Platt Street, Leigh, at around 11.45pm on Saturday.

Three people – two men aged 48 and 44 and a woman aged 22 – were arrested on suspicion of murder – although two have now been released.

A large police cordon was set up on the terraced street as forensic officers combed the scene. It was eventually lifted just before 1pm yesterday.

Greater Manchester Police said they were called to the incident by the ambulance service after they found the man with a stab wound.

When officers arrived he was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said they heard screaming at around 11pm on Saturday, but assumed it was children messing around.

They added that there had been a ‘few problems’ on Platt Street recently. On their Twitter account, GMP Leigh described it as an ‘isolated incident.’ Det Chf Insp Stuart Wilkinson said: “While enquiries continue, this man and his family will stay at the forefront of officers’ minds and we will continue to offer our support to those closest to him.” Anyone with any information should call police on 0161 856 9908.
