Wolfpack too strong for the Centurions

- By TOM BRAMWELL

LEIGH became the latest side to fall victim to Toronto’s charge towards Super League.

The Centurions took the lead thanks to a penalty from Martyn Ridyard. However, the Wolfpack scored two tries before half-time to take a 10-2 lead into the break and extended their lead 15 minutes into the second period when Danny Richardson was sent to the sinbin for a professional foul. Luke Douglas crossed for a try late on, but Toronto held on for a 14-8 victory.

At Heywood Road, SWINTON were beaten 26-24 by Toulouse Olympique. After a slow start in which the visitors scored twice, the Lions took the lead thanks to tries from Mike Butt and Jack Hansen, but Sylvain Houles’ side produced another quickfire double just before half-time. Despite tries from Rob Fairclough and Liam Forsyth in the second period, a converted try and penalty were enough to secure the result for Olympique.

ROCHDALE were beaten 18-12 at Batley, with Adam Lawton - on loan from Salford Red Devils - and captain Lee Mitchell getting the scores.

In League 1, OLDHAM bounced back from last week’s defeat at home to Workington with a 36-12 victory over Whitehaven. A hat-trick inside the first half hour from Zack McComb, plus a double from Richie Hawkyard and a Dave Hewitt try secured the two points for Scott Naylor’s side,. Fellow promotion favourites Newcastle Thunder fell to a shock 32-28 loss at Coventry Bears.
