Bury back to winning ways against Silkmen

- LEAGUE TWO By OLI LATHROPE

BURY manager Ryan Lowe hailed the bounce-back ability of his side after they won a fourth straight league game by beating Macclesfield 3-0 at Gigg Lane.

The Shakers’ hopes of reaching Wembley in the Checkatrade Trophy were ended by Portsmouth on Tuesday, but goals from Nicky Maynard, Jay O’Shea and Scott Wharton helped them get back to winning ways.

“The response was terrific. It’s always tough when you play a side like Macclesfield because everyone expects you to win 4 or 5 nil, that’s not always the case,” Lowe said.

“But we’ve worked hard today and got three good goals, so I’m very pleased.

“It was a big test of character, because when you get beat the first thing you want to do is bounce back, and we did that.”

Bury took the lead in the 24th minute when Maynard turned the ball home after Caolan Lavery’s initial shot was saved.

Despite the vast gap between the two sides in the table, Lowe’s side had to wait until 15 minutes from time to double their lead.

Macclesfield defender Michael Rose was adjudged to have blocked Danny Mayors’ shot with his hand in the box, and O’Shea slotted the ball into the bottom left-hand corner from the spot.

Bury added a third as Wharton’s towering header wrapped up the three points in stoppage time.
