Thugs ‘threw axe’ at cyclist on Loop

A GROUP of young thugs ambushed a cyclist.

The rider, who wishes to remain anonymous, was travelling along a section of the on the Fallowfiel­d Loop, where it meets Hyde Road, in Gorton, when he saw the four teenagers ahead.

In a video clip, the four youngsters can be seen dressed in tracksuits with their hoods pulled up and their faces covered.

The cyclist bravely decided to not stop, but instead cycled past the group.

One of the teenagers can be seen launching a weapon towards the cyclist, but fortunatel­y it missed hitting him and fell to the floor. It is thought the weapon may have been a small axe or a hammer.

The four boys can be seen chasing the cyclist, but fortunatel­y he managed to escape uninjured.

The incident took place on Saturday just before 2pm and was reported to police.

It follows a spate of violent attacks and robberies on cyclists along the Fallowfiel­d Loop pathway and the Yellow Brick Road, from the Velodrome.

At least 21 cyclists were attacked within a short space of time last autumn, according to figures released by Walk Ride Greater Manchester.

Four teenagers were arrested before Christmas and remain on bail.

The clip, captured using a camera attached to the rider’s bike, is understood to have taken one of the clearest images taken so far of suspected attackers on the route.
