I wasn’t sure Rashford was going to take pen, says Ole

- By SAMUEL LUCKHURST

OLE Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested he was not certain Marcus Rashford would take the penalty that completed United’s extraordinary Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Video Assistant Review adjudged that Diogo Dalot’s stoppage-time goalbound shot was handled by Presnel Kimpembe and, after a nervewracking four-minute-and-ninesecond wait, Rashford stepped up to beat Gianluigi Buffon and send United through.

Paul Pogba has been United’s main penalty taker this season but was suspended for the second leg in Paris. Romelu Lukaku scored a third successive brace to put United 2-1 up at the Parc des Princes but Rashford stepped up to take his first career penalty for United.

Lukaku failed with his only spotkick for United and, although Rashford scored a penalty in England’s World Cup shootout victory over Colombia last year, his strike at PSG was his first for United since he stepped up against Queens Park Rangers for the Under-18s in 2015.

“Absolutely fantastic,” Solskjaer said of Rashford’s nerve. “Fearless, the kid is. He’s got no doubts, no fear. And when you’re young you don’t have any fear.

“I wasn’t sure we’d score, I’ve been in the Champions League before with Molde and we played Basel and we got a pen in the last minute to go through and we missed it. So, of course, that went through my mind.

“But Rashy and Rom were on penalties today, it was up to them to fight and Rashy slotted it, brilliant.”
