Carnival could be saved

EVENT MAY STILL GO AHEAD IF PEOPLE COME FORWARD TO HELP OUT

- By PATRICK JACK

STOCKPORT Carnival, which folded last week after more than 100 years, could be saved.

Bosses said the event, which sees dozens of floats parade through the streets before a festival in Woodbank Park, had come to the end of the road due to a lack of volunteers.

The carnival committee has been disbanded, with remaining funds donated to good causes, with organisers citing a lack of volunteers and health and safety fears.

The announcement caused an outcry, but the M.E.N. understands the event could now be saved – if enough people come forward.

Stockport council has backed the call to arms, saying it would support volunteers.

The carnival has been organised and marshalled by a team of unpaid community volunteers for decades, with sponsorship from local businesses.

A source told the M.E.N. at least 12 people will be needed to put the event on this year.

“There is nothing to stop all those people who now want to volunteer to organise themselves into a committee and carry it on,” they said.

“That would be amazing could.”

There are fears the appeal has come too late to save the festival in time for summer.

The carnival has been a staple in the town since the late 1800s. Last year’s event attracted over 25,000 spectators.

Violet Barrow, from Bramhall, has already offered her help. if they

She said: “I did not know there was a need for volunteers. I was upset that we may be losing the tradition.

“I think it is a way to bring the community together. Hopefully it’s not too late.”

Ex-committee member Carol Sykes and resident Tracey White said they would be prepared to give up their time to work for the carnival.

Anyone wanting to get involved should message the Stockport Carnival Facebook group or visit the official website.
