Out of favour at United, but Reds duo are record breakers

- By DAN O’TOOLE

ANTONIO Valencia and Matteo Darmian might be out of the picture at United, but they secured their names in the Guinness Book of World Records in a challenge set by one of the club’s commercial partners.

The defenders beat the existing record for the number of goals scored from a corner in 60 seconds by registering six successful attempts.

Reds midfielder Fred also tried his hand but failed to top the previous record of four.

Valencia, the club captain at Old Trafford, is set to leave the club at the end of the season after United decided against taking up their option to extend the Ecuador international’s stay at the club by a further year. The full-back, who joined United from Wigan 10 years ago this summer, has made eight appearances for the Reds this season and last featured in the 2-0 win at Newcastle on January 2.

Darmian, meanwhile, has turned out just six times for United this season and spoke of his desire to return to Italy in December.

“I must say, I really do miss Serie A and Italy now,” he said.

“I know that I am at one of the best clubs in the world and I am proud to be at Manchester United, but I do miss Italy. I love my country.

“Returning to play for Italy is my objective. Roberto Mancini (Italy head coach) hasn’t called me up yet, but I hope he will in future.”
