For those less interested in abandoned spaces, how about a garden? Pasha Gardens is an almost forgotten park near Thessaloni­ki’s old town.

Dotted with seating areas, gates and fountains, many people consider Pasha Gardens to be a mysterious, mystical and otherworld­ly place.

With unknown origins and multiple theories, Pasha Gardens is an enigma of a beauty spot.

The gardens are within walking distance of the city centre but there is also a bus stop if you are staying further out of town.

For something a bit more populated and bustling, try Navarinou Square.

A hot-spot for young people and students, the square is full of delicious bakeries, talented buskers and those just wanting to watch the world go by for a short while.

Sit down, have a bite to eat and If you’re visiting during summer, before to check out Cine Natali, Thessaloni­ki’s cinema under the stars.

For a few months every summer, films less widely shown than blockbuste­rs are available to watch with drinks and snacks, all while surrounded by the fresh air and beauty of Thessaloni­ki’s nights. Tickets are no more than EUR8 (just over £7).

For a view that’s live and in-person, not on-screen, visit the White Tower of Thessaloni­ki. Guarding the waterfront for over 600 years and with history as a prison, the tower provides a museum and amazing views out onto the Aegean Sea. Tickets between EUR2 and EUR3 (£1.50 and £3).

For a bit more adventure, try The Mind Trap.

The ‘largest escape room in Europe’ the Mind Trap promises riddles, puzzles and themed rooms to suit any group. With rooms like ‘Split’, ‘Middle Earth’ and ‘The School of Wizards’, make sure you book in advance to avoid disappoint­ment. Prices start from EUR15 (just over £13) and get cheaper per person the more people you bring.
