Hammer attack on man after he ‘was hit by car’

- By REBECCA DAY

WITNESSES said a man was left dripping with blood and screaming in pain following an attack in Salford.

The man is understood to have been hit by a car before masked men got out of the vehicle and attacked him with hammers.

The incident happened on Upper Park Road at 5pm on Monday.

The road was cordoned off by police.

Paramedics treated the victim for swelling and cuts and bruises. They said they believe a car was ‘involved.’

A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service said: “We got a call at 5pm to Upper Park Road. It looks like someone was attacked.

“A 29-year-old male was conscious and breathing.

“He had facial injuries - some minor cuts and swelling. We took him to Salford Royal Hospital.”

A resident, who didn’t want to be named, said: “A car drove down the street and knocked a guy over first. Then they hit him with hammers.

“They all wore balaclavas. Then they drove off.

“There was a lot of screaming and shouting. I ran to see. He was covered in blood. The whole street was there.

“The Jewish paramedics were first on the scene.”

Another eyewitness was driving past when he saw the victim covered in blood walking down the street.

He said: “It was around 5pm, a guy covered in blood looked like he’d been smashed in the face by someone.

“His face was all bloody. He had blood on his right arm. I went past in the car and saw him. A few minutes later, I saw an ambulance. There was a lady trying to tug his arm to make sure he didn’t go anywhere.

“I was horrified. He looked terrible. There’s no violence round here.

“He seemed disorientated, he was trying to get away from a woman holding him.”

Upper Park Road is in a mainly Jewish area of Salford. A spokesman for the CST, a Jewish security company, said they have not been contacted directly about the incident. He said: “At was this stage we are not treating it as an antisemetic attack.”

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “A man aged 29 was assaulted by four other men, one of whom was armed with a hammer, before the offenders fled in a dark grey/green saloon car.

”The man was taken to hospital, where he remains with serious injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
