Ammies boss: We let ourselves down

-

A FRUSTRATED Graham Alexander said he felt ‘desperately sorry’ for the travelling Salford City faithful as his side slumped to a 4-1 defeat against Crewe Alexandra.

The Ammies looked on course for their first away victory in League Two with Adam Rooney capitalising on a goalkeeping error to cap off an imperious firsthalf display.

Within five minutes of the restart, however, the rampaging Railwaymen flipped the game on its head with Chris Porter’s smart headed equaliser instigating a surprise onslaught.

The influential Tom Lowery handed Crewe the advantage inside the hour mark, skipping easily behind the backline to then smartly lift a shot over Kyle Letheren.

The Salford stopper was left a bystander moments later as Harry Pickering’s long-range effort arrowed into the top corner, before Lowery added the finishing touches for the secondplaced side.

“It was two games of football,” berated Salford boss Alexander. “One in the first half where we were in complete control and a second where we’ve conceded a terrible goal early again and took a step back in every action.

“It’s an incredibly sore one to take because we didn’t see that coming at half-time.

“It’s a difficult day for us – the following we brought here was magnificent and they’ve seen the best and worst of Salford.

“I feel desperately sorry for them.

“We’ve let ourselves, our club and our supporters down badly in the second half.

“It’s difficult to think of how well we played in the first half – we have to take the positives, but need to lick our wounds first.”
