Aguero has tough task to topple Vardy

- By MARCUS BANKS

CITY forward Sergio Aguero is chasing Jamie Vardy’s Premier League record of scoring in 11 consecutive games.

The Leicester City forward made history during the Foxes’ unlikely title triumph in 2016, breaking Ruud van Nistelrooy’s mark by scoring - fittingly against United in November 2015.

Aguero - who was rested for last night’s Carabao Cup trip to Preston - has made a blistering start to the new Premier League campaign, scoring in each of City’s six games thus far, meaning he may have one eye on Vardy’s record.

However, to do so, he must reverse his form against the teams that the Blues face in the next few weeks.

First up is a trip to Goodison Park on September 28. Marco Silva’s men have made a poor start to the season so Aguero’s confidence should be high.

Nevertheless, the Argentine has netted just two goals in 13 appearances against the Toffees, his worst scoring ratio against opponent he has faced more than once. His last goal against Everton was in 2014.

Things don’t get much easier for the 31-year-old as a home fixture against Crystal Palace follows - a team that beat City at the Etihad last year.

Aguero has just three goals in nine fixtures against the Eagles.

The game is followed by matches against Wolves (one goal from four games) and Southampton (four goals from 11).

According to the Premier League, Aguero’s overall scoring rate in the league is a goal every 1.42 matches. However, against City’s next five opponents, it drops to a strike every 3.36 matches.

Should the former Atletico Madrid forward continue to find the net, he has the chance to break Vardy’s record at a stadium he typically struggles at - Anfield.

City travel to Merseyside to face the league leaders on November 10, a ground where Aguero never scored.

However, there would be no sweeter way to write his name in the history books than scoring in front of The Kop against their title rivals.
