/FOOD & DRINK IT’S THE END OF THE LINE FOR UMEZUSHI

- By DAISY JACKSON

ONE of Manchester’s most highly-regarded restaurants has announced its imminent closure. According to a notice posted online by owners Terry Huang and Hanna Michnowicz, Umezushi will close its doors for the final time on October 20.

The post claims that the restaurant will be closing after seven years in the city for a number of reasons, but that ‘none is worth mentioning.’

It also reads that the team hopes to bring the same philosophy in a brand new setting in the future.

The tiny Japanese restaurant sits beneath a railway arch on Mirabel Street, close to Victoria Station and the equally highly-praised The Sparrows restaurant.

Described as a ‘hidden gem’ and a ‘miracle’ by Jay Rayner in The Guardian, Umezushi has been a regular feature in the Good Food Guide, the Harden’s Guide and the Michelin Guide.

The restaurant is also nominated for Best Restaurant at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards year after year - a nomination it has earned once again for this year’s upcoming festival.

Umezushi’s post reads: “The past 7 years has been a great experience for all of us at Umezushi. We have learned a huge amount about sushi, about operating a restaurant, about people, and most importantly

about ourselves. We have also built incredible connections with many people that we know will last beyond Umezushi.

“Unfortunately, not all good things can last. Umezushi, regrettably, is another one and reasons, there are many, but none is worth mentioning,

“This is not the end for us. We are constantly exploring new ideas and new possibilities. We are hoping to bring you the same philosophy in a brand new setting. On behalf of the Umezushi team, We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in the past 7 years.”

The M.E.N. has approached Umezushi for a comment.
