A HEADTEACHER has urged pupils to walk to and from schools in pairs after a girl fell victim to moped muggers.

It comes after the M.E.N. reported how a 12-year-old girl had her mobile phone snatched from her hand outside Middleton Technology School earlier this month.

Dashcam footage shows the thieves circling in the road and pulling wheelies before approaching a girl in her school uniform and snatching a phone from her hand.

Following the attack the victim’s mum Zoe Loftus, 42, said: “They were clearly targeting the kids coming out of school.

“It’s disgusting, they’re absolute scum to be robbing little girls.”

Middleton Technology School headteacher Janine Kellett has now written to parents to inform them staff will be speaking to pupils ‘about how to keep themselves safe outside school.’

In the letter Ms Kellett also warned of a recent incident when a man ‘persistently asked’ a girl if she wanted a lift to school.

She refused and he drove off. The school says both incidents were reported to police.

Ms Kellett’s letter says: “I am writing to inform you of two reported incidents over the past week.

“A female student who was using her phone near the school premises after school had finished had her phone taken by a group on mopeds.

“This incident has been reported to police and school are working with the police on this matter.

“The second incident happened where a student was approached by a male in a dark-coloured car, asking persistently if she wanted a lift to school.

“The girl did the right thing by saying no and the car drove off,” the letter added.

“This incident has been reported to police.

“We will be talking to students this week about how to keep themselves safe outside school.

“In particular, focusing on keeping valuable objects out of sight, locking up bikes and, where possible, to stay in pairs when walking to and from school.

“We ask that you also speak to your child about the importance of staying safe, and if you have any concerns, to contact the school immediately.”
