BRAVE SEVEN-YEAR-OLD PHONED 999 FOR AMBULANCE AFTER MUM HAD EPILEPTIC FIT

A MUM has praised the actions of her brave daughter who helped save her life when she collapsed at home.

Catherine Matheson was about to take her daughter Mazie to school when she suffered an epileptic fit.

The seven-year-old rushed to her neighbour’s house for help, but nobody was home.

But the youngster didn’t panic. She called her grandad who was at work and called 999, put her mum in the recovery position and then calmly waited for the ambulance crew to arrive.

Catherine, from Moston, who has had epilepsy since she was 16, said: “I do have fits but only around once every two years as they’re well controlled with medication.

“This one was triggered by antibiotics I was taking for a kidney infection and it’s the first time Mazie has ever been alone with me when it’s happened.

“We were in the living room waiting for a taxi and I started fitting on the sofa and fell to the floor.”

The 41-year-old, whose 17-yearold son Joshua had already gone to college, added: “When nobody was in next door, she rang my dad and told him what was happening so he tried to keep her calm and told her what to do.

“He was at work so he got his wife to rush round as soon as she could. In the meantime Mazie waited for the ambulance but she was with me for about 20 minutes altogether and was so brave.

“She told the ambulance crew I had a kidney infection and was on antibiotics as it was the antibiotics that had sent me into the fit.

“She was always aware that I could have a fit so she knew not to leave my side but it must have been so traumatic for her. It would be hard for an adult, let alone a sevenyear-old.”

After a night’s stay in North Manchester General, Catherine was back home with her children and making a fuss of her daughter, who recovered from the ordeal with a much-deserved day off from Moston Fields Primary School.

She added: “We told her how brave she’d been and she’s been spoilt with lots of toys.”

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: “It’s really important that children are taught at an early age what to do in the event of an emergency by knowing what number to dial and their address.

“We love to hear stories of when children have gone above and beyond and been little superheroes when it comes to an emergency.

“Big well done to Mazie for being so brave and keeping calm in what must have been a very frightening situation.”
