‘I’ll miss BGMT’, says host of axed TV show

-

TV host Stephen Mulhern has spoken out following the axing of his popular TV show Britain’s Got More Talent.

There’s been an outpouring of affection on social media since the news broke this week that ITV is dropping its ITV2 spin-off – and Stephen agrees that it’s ‘a real shame.’

Speaking exclusively with the M.E.N. following a visit to Manchester its presenter says he’ll miss BGMT.

“I get where they are going in terms of it needs to go online and needs to get a young audience,” he said.

“Am I going to miss it? Yes.

“It’s a real shame but life is life and you need to deal with what comes your way.”

ITV left a trail of unhappy fans following the announcement that the Britain’s Got Talent spin-off show was being dropped in favour of ‘digital platforms.’

It has aired on ITV2 following the main show since 2007 but as of next year, the show will be no more with a shift in “viewing habits” to blame.

Stephen, who has appeared on stage and screen for more than 20 years and also presents the shows In for a Penny and Catchphrase, told 40 school children aged 10 and 11 what it’s like to work with the likes of Ant and Dec – and he entertained them with some of his magic tricks.

And Stephen said they’re stars to look out for in the future. “What this whole idea is creating for the kids is a platform and a moment to shine,” he said.

“I’ve been performing since the age of 11 when my dad taught me magic tricks and at 16 I decided to leave school and became a performer.

“The masterclass gave advice on what to do if they get nervous, learning scripts and performance skills.

“In Manchester they have a lot of confidence but not too much.”

He added: “I’ve always said with Ant and Dec when they do live shows they’ve got each other and can rely on each other.

“But when you’re solo, if it goes wrong you’ve got to deal with it. I taught the kids if it does go wrong there’s always a get out. I have a pack of playing cards in my suit pocket and I can always play with those.”

Julie Gatley, year six teaching assistant at Webster Primary School, said: “The children had a fantastic time and were in awe of Stephen and his magic.

“The children have not stopped talking about Stephen and his magic tricks.

“Stephen was just a joy to watch. Stephen had such charisma and allure – the children were utterly fascinated and learned a lot about performance and magic.”
