OCTOBER 6: Former Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham celebrates scoring England’s first goal in their World Cup Qualifier against Greece at Old Trafford.

England drew 2-2 thanks to Sheringham’s goal and a superbly struck free kick from United midfielder David Beckham in the 93rd minute.

Sheringham won 51 international caps for England from 1993 to 2002, scoring 11 goals.

He made 104 appearances for the Red Devils from 1997 to 2001, notching up 31 goals.

OCTOBER 18: Manchester-born novelist Winston Graham relaxes in his garden, perhaps reflecting on the success of his world-famous Poldark novels.

Graham, born in June 1910, started writing books at the age of 17.

His first Poldark novel, Ross Poldark, was published in 1945 followed by Demelza in 1946.

Before moving to Sussex, Graham spent 30 years living at Perranporth in Cornwall, the setting for the Poldark series.

The illustrated London News described the Poldark books as ‘not only rattling good yarns, but also detailed portraits of the early days of tin and copper mining.’

OCTOBER 19: Writer, director and theatre impresario Noel Coward is surrounded by the press on the opening night of two of his plays in Manchester.

Hay Fever, a play he wrote in 1922, opened at the Opera House while High Spirits, a musical version of Blithe Spirit, started its run at the Palace Theatre.

Hay Fever starred Maggie Smith and Lynn Redgrave while Jan Walters and Marti Stevens played lead roles in High Spirits.
