ATHLETICS Eliud Kipchoge has become the first runner to finish a marathon in under two hours.
The 34-year-old Kenyan (pictured) completed the course in Vienna, Austria, in an incredible one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds.
Kipchoge was racing alone but assisted by 41 pacemakers, including former Olympic and world record holders, in his attempt to achieve the milestone.
The time will not be an official world record but is nonetheless a historic moment in distance running.
“After 65 years, I am the first man! I want to inspire many people, that no human is limited,” he said.
F1 Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes boss Toto Wolff insists he is not about to turn his back on the team.
Mercedes could clinch their sixth consecutive constructors’ championship at today’s Japanese Grand Prix. Austrian Wolff, 47, has been touted as a leading candidate to take charge of the sport. Chief executive Chase Carey’s contract is up for renewal at the end of next season.
“I haven’t given it consideration and certainly have not had any concrete discussions about running Formula One,” Wolff said.
FOOTBALL England’s awful performance and 2-1 defeat to the Czech Rpublic shocked Gareth Southgate and the manager expects a response in Bulgaria on Tuesday.
“Nothing in the preparation for the game suggested that we would get the performance we did,” he said. “So, the players are human beings, some nights it doesn’t happen and tonight was one of those nights.
“We have to find the solution, we have to accept we weren’t good enough and we have to move forward but congratulate the Czechs.”
