Police chase driver crashed into speed sign

- By ANDREW BARDSLEY

A DRIVER who sped away from police only stopped after crashing into a speed limit sign, a court heard.

Jack Griffin, 24, had 13 wraps of heroin and a lock knife in his Vauxhall Meriva when he aroused the suspicions of the police.

Officers began chasing him around north Manchester at about 2pm on November 1 last year, after they found his car was registered to an address in Lincoln.

Father-of-one Griffin, from Miles Platting, refused to stop for police, and started weaving in and out of the road, as well as moving onto the wrong side of the carriageway.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Griffin sped off along Rochdale Road heading towards Manchester.

He went through red lights, and after moving onto Oldham Road, he mounted the pavement.

Police had to speed up to 70mph in a 30mph zone to catch him.

But the pursuit ended when Griffin collided with a ‘speed limit sign’, prosecutor Andrew Macintosh said.

Officers boxed him in and detained him, finding the heroin in the car which was worth £130.

The court heard that Griffin had previous convictions for possessing a blade and possession of heroin and cocaine.

Judge Anthony Cross QC deferred sentencing for six months, saying he wanted further details of Griffin’s previous convictions, evidence that Griffin is working on his drug problem, and information from his employer.

Griffin, of Tideswell Avenue, Miles Platting, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, possession of a blade and possession of heroin.

He was also given an interim driving ban.
