Yob in McDonald’s rampage

- By STEVE ROBSON

A DRUNKEN yob has been spared jail after he admitted carrying out a 4am rampage in McDonald’s that left him covered in blood.

Craig Smith, 27, had been drinking with friends before he ended up in a branch of the fast food chain on Ordsall Lane, Salford, in the early hours.

Manchester Magistrates’ Court heard manager Jack Ryan saw Smith come in.

Smith ordered some food and initially sat on his own, but then befriended an elderly homeless man who was drinking from a bottle of vodka, the court heard.

At around 4am, Smith, of Parrswood Road, Manchester, began ‘causing a nuisance,’ the court heard.

“He went over and started speaking to Mr Ryan behind the counter,” prosecutor Tess Kenyon said. “Initially, he was just behaving oddly. “Then he started to be abusive.” At the same time, Mr Ryan realised the elderly man who had been drinking the vodka was no longer responsive, the court heard.

The manager decided to call an ambulance which angered Smith.

“Smith started to follow Mr Ryan around behind the counter,” said Miss Kenyon. “The defendant was asking ‘who are you calling?’”

Eventually, Mr Ryan became so concerned he told the rest of the staff to lock themselves in the staff room and asked for police to attend.

Smith continued to be aggressive and began helping himself to chips and a bottle of sauce, the court heard.

He then sat down again and continued to direct rude hand gestures and comments towards Mr Ryan.

Smith eventually left and Mr Ryan immediately went to lock the main restaurant door, the court heard.

Smith reacted by kicking the door until the glass smashed.

“By the time police arrived, the defendant had pulled glass out of the door and was trying to climb through,” said Miss Kenyon.

Police arrested Smith at the scene and had to take him to hospital for treatment to cuts, the court heard.

Smith admitted a public order offence, burglary and causing £1,000 worth of criminal damage.

The district judge sentenced Smith to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, telling him he was very lucky not to be going straight behind bars.

Smith must also pay £500 compensation.
