ALTRINCHAM Grammar School For Girls has been named as the top performing school in Greater Manchester for GCSEs.

The secondary school, in Bowdon, had the highest average score for GCSE exam results in the region this year.

The figures were based on the school’s Attainment 8 score - the average grade each student achieved across eight subjects.

The GCSEs include English, Maths and a range of other subjects - and the higher the score, the better.

The school achieved 78.4 points per pupil across this measure in their 2019 GCSEs. No other state secondary school in the area performed this well.

Altrincham Grammar School for Boys came second, where students had an average Attainment 8 score of 77.8 points.

Loreto Grammar School came third, with each pupil scoring 73.2 on average.

In fact, the top seven schools in Greater Manchester were all in Trafford.

The average Attainment 8 score varied widely between each borough from 56.0 in Trafford to 39.0 in Salford.

That compared to 46.7 for pupils across all state-funded schools in England.

The best-performing school in terms of Attainment 8 grades in Manchester was The King David High School where pupils scored 59.5 on average.

In Bolton it was Bolton Muslim Girls School (60.1) and in Bury it was St Monica’s RC High School (50.4).

The Blue Coat CofE School was the best-performing school in Oldham (53.9) while for Rochdale it was Holy Family Roman Catholic and Church of England College (57.0).

Beis Yaakov High School in Salford had a score of 55.8 and Cheadle Hulme High School in Stockport saw average Attainment 8 scores of 58.0.

Tameside’s best-performing school was St Damian’s RC Science College (54.6) while for Wigan it was Standish Community High School (54.5).

Nationally, students in state schools performed slightly better in their GCSEs in 2019 than they did the year before, when the average Attainment 8 score was 46.4.
