Serg closing on Euro goal record after two in rout

- By MARCUS BANKS

CITY forward Sergio Aguero is on the verge of breaking Didier Drogba’s UEFA Champions League record after notching a brace in the 5-1 rout against Atalanta on Tuesday night.

The striker levelled the score on 34 minutes after Ruslan Malinovskiy had put the visitors ahead following Fernandinho’s clumsy challenge in the penalty area.

The Argentine put City ahead just four minutes later with a penalty of his own after Raheem Sterling was fouled.

Sterling netted a second-half hat-trick to ensure City left with three points and Aguero’s brace sees him chase down a host of legendary names in the record books.

By scoring twice he took his Champions League goal tally to 34 for City – the third highest number of any player for an English club.

Top of the scoring charts is Chelsea legend Didier Drogba (36) followed by Arsenal icon Thierry Henry (35) and United favourite Ruud van Nistelrooy (35).

With three group stage games remaining and City’s qualification virtually in the bag, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Aguero break the record before the knockout stages begin.

However, Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy could see him forced to wait a little longer before taking the crown, with Gabriel Jesus set to receive minutes over the next few games.

Sterling also made history during the win against Atalanta, becoming the first English player to score a hat-trick for City in the Champions League.

Guardiola will be hoping his excellent performances continue as he looks to end the club’s wait for their first European Cup.
