Early ‘goal of the season’ sees County end poor run

- NON-LEAGUE By CONNOR WHITLEY

STOCKPORT County beat Dover Athletic on Saturday recording their first away victory in the National League since their win at Wrexham at the end of August.

A Frank Mulhern goal meant the Hatters came away with all three points in what will be their longest away trip of the season.

And manager Jim Gannon (pictured) was full of praise, saying: “I’m really pleased for the club and the fans, because it’s a long way to come – everyone has been superb this week.”

The decisive strike came on the half-hour mark when Mulhern spotted the

Dover goalkeeper

Yusuf Mersin off his line.

From 45 yards out the forward received the ball and turned with one touch before volleying over the 6’5”

Mersin.

Gannon described the early frontrunner for County’s goal of the season as a ‘fantastic finish.’

In National League North, Altrincham’s game against AFC Telford United and Curzon Ashton’s fixture against Kettering Town were postponed due to the rain.

FC United’s first round FA Trophy tie against Radcliffe also succumbed to the weather with the tie now set for tomorrow night at Radcliffe’s Stainton Park.

Ashton United progressed in the FA Trophy game after a 1-0 victory over Warrington Town in their first round tie.

Substitute Sam Sheridan scored the winner with his first touch in the 67th minute with manager Jody Banim describing Sheridan’s impact as a ‘manager’s dream.’

After a poor first-half Banim was pleased with his side’s second-half performance.

“We got into them at halftime and I think it was a proper away performance in the second half,” he said.
