Ammies boss looks to play-offs

- FOOTBALL By CHARLIE GREGORY

MANAGER Graham Alexander has hinted that his Salford City outfit are capable of vying for promotion after a ‘satisfactory’ start to the season – provided they continue to improve.

The Ammies have endured an inconsistent start to life in the Football League, but a fruitful October – picking up 10 points from a possible 15 – has since moved them to 12th in League Two and only six points off the play-off places.

Alexander, right, told

M.E.N. Sport: “I think we need to keep improving.

If we don’t improve, then I don’t think we will (make the play-offs). I know what the players are capable of and I know their characters, but it’s about that consistency of performance. We have to have bigger spells in games where we’re on top and if we do that, we know we’ve got a good team with good players.”

After Saturday’s 1-1 draw versus Scunthorpe United, the fourth tier is now a third of the way through the season, and Alexander reflected on how Salford City have adapted to the EFL.

“I think we’ve had a bit of everything really. We had a big squad at the start of the season; I wanted to give people the opportunity to prove themselves. We made too many changes trying to find that winning formula and I think we unsettled the squad – once we came to terms with that, we made improvements.

“The players responded really well to that difficult period and have shown that they can compete and win games. We’ve shown that we can take adversity and respond to it in the right way.

“Whenever you play a season of football, there’s always adversity along the way, but I think the players have shown they’ve got good characters and that we can react and improve, and that’s what we’ve got to continue to do.”

The Ammies now face a tough test, playing five of the top seven clubs in the division in their next seven league fixtures.
