TWO people were taken to hospital after a stabbing at a tower block.

There was a huge emergency service response after violence broke out at Abbey Court on Abbey Hey Lane in Gorton. Scores of police cars and ambulances were seen on Hollybush Street.

Residents said armed officers were among those who responded after they reported seeing people running from the block carrying bread knives.

Police confirmed they were called to reports of a stabbing and that two people were injured.

A man was held on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm while a woman was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.

Police said in a statement: “A 26-year-old man sustained minor stab wounds and remains in hospital while another man has been discharged from hospital with a minor face injury.”

The incident happened before midnight on Tuesday.

One resident in the block, who asked not want to be named, said: “It was madness. There were just around six of them apparently running round with knives.” Another resident said: “Basically, around 12am loads of police turned up the street was completely blocked off.

“I believe there was a fight that broke out and that they started attacking each other with bread knives.

“It was like the full police force turned up – there was armed response and I saw someone being brought out by police.

“It’s obviously shocking but sadly we’re used to it.”

Another woman said: “I saw a guy being brought out with no top on, with blood on him and a bandage.

“I couldn’t see much after that as police just filled the street.”
